Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis is a Membranous Technology
Reverse osmosis is a membrane based water purification technology that ultimately results in sufficiently deionized water for use in a number of commercial & industrial applications including automotive component manufacturing, rinsing, powder coating, e-coating (electro deposition coating), food & beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, hospitality, residency, HVAC (cooling tower operation) & many others. As a technology, reverse osmosis arose shortly after mixed & separate bed water deionization, and has since proven to be a more cost-effective, safer & more feasible alternative. Given the nature of reverse osmosis systems, especially industrial reverse osmosis systems, sufficient pretreatment is often required. This usually calls for the incorporation of water softeners, carbon filters, iron removal systems, UV systems & sediment water filters. The reverse osmosis membranes are responsible for all of the purification in a reverse osmosis system, whereas the pretreatment is responsible to condition feed/incoming water to prepare it for purification.
Reverse osmosis water pretreatment can include:
- commercial water softeners
- carbon filter tanks
- sediment filters
- ultraviolet light disinfection systems (UV systems)
- iron, hydrogen sulfide & manganese filtration systems (chemical-free)
- anti-scale systems
Conditioning or treating feed water for reverse osmosis is certainly not a necessity, but is highly advisable for one main reason. Reverse osmosis membranes aren’t cheap! As the most costly component of maintaining a commercial reverse osmosis system, RO membranes can be plugged up by sediment, grit, dirt, sand & other small particles over time. Further, if the incoming or feed water is hard, scaling may occur within the reverse osmosis membranes, thereby preventing adequate water purification. For these reasons, we strongly recommend the use of water softeners, carbon filters, iron filters, UV systems & other pretreatment equipment prior to the implementation of a commercial or industrial reverse osmosis system.

Commercial & Industrial Reverse Osmosis Systems
Viridian Water Systems has more than 30 years of experience installing & maintaining commercial & industrial reverse osmosis systems. Reverse osmosis systems as well as water deionization systems are applicable in a wide range of commercial and industrial business sectors including manufacturing, powder coating, automotive component rinsing, electronics manufacturing, hospitality, residency, commercial offices & others. Viridian has experience in the sale, installation & prolonged maintenance of reverse osmosis systems ranging in product flow rate from 0.5 gpm – 200+ gpm. The conductivity of the final permeate, after a mixed bed deionization cartridge polisher, is 10-20 mS/cm. Reverse osmosis water typically has a resistivity of 18+ MW.
Commercial
In commercial settings, reverse osmosis water is typically used as drinking water. Compared to city water/municipal water, reverse osmosis water contains far less dissolved solids such as iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, etc. Also, since our reverse osmosis water systems include pH boosters, the final product water is not devoid of ample minerals. Further, our reverse osmosis systems are accompanied by UV systems (ultraviolet light disinfection systems), which eradicate all forms of micro-organismal threats that may exist in the water. Viridian Water Systems has incorporated commercial reverse osmosis systems in some of the following applications:
- Hospitals
- Retirement Residences
- Apartment Buildings
- Multi-housing Complexes
- Water Bottling Plants
- Warehouses/Distribution Centers
- Spot-free Car Washes
- Laundromats
- Restaurants
- Hotels/Motels
- Cosmetics Manufacturers
- Greenhouses
- Fisheries
Commercial reverse osmosis systems typically range in permeate (RO water) flow rate from 0.5 gpm – 20 gpm. Very rarely are there ever any stipulations with commercial water treatment setups because the reverse osmosis or deionized water in such setups isn’t usually subject to rigorous manufacturing regulations as it is in industrial water purification projects.
Industrial
Industrial water treatment includes a great many things, namely industrial reverse osmosis systems, industrial water deionization systems, industrial water softeners, industrial carbon filters, industrial UV systems & more. Industrial reverse osmosis system setups often include polypropylene storage tanks, water booster pumps, flow meters, control valves, pressure valves, concentrate & flush valves, pressure gauges and conductivity/TDS meters.
Industrial reverse osmosis systems can range in flow rates from 10gpm – 200+ gpm, depending on what the application & water usage pattern is. Viridian Water Systems specializes in the installation & commissioning of industrial reverse osmosis systems for the following industries:
- Automotive Component Manufacturing
- Wash Line Rinsing
- Electronics Manufacturing
- Food & Beverage Production
- Chemical Lubricant Synthesis
- Stainless Steel Sink Manufacturing
- Powder Coating/E-Coating
- Alcohol Distillation/Refining
- Oil/Gas Refineries
